To determine how well the point spreads of a sportsbook capture the median margin of victory, we computed the expected profit (on a unit bet) for each match using an empirically measured CDF of the margin of victory for each stratified sample. The results are displayed in Fig 4. For each match, the height of the bar indicates the estimated expected profit for wagering on the team with the higher probability. The results show that the point spreads of a sportsbook are within 2.4 percentiles of the true median result.
